Glass House Tavern: Great Dining in Midtown West

One of the biggest ironies about New York is Times Square. For tourists, Times Square epitomizes New York City; for locals, it's often a neighborhood that is fervently avoided.

However, for both outside enthusiasts and hate-filled locals, there is reason to visit the confines of Midtown West. Glass House Tavern, which is located on 47th Street off 8th Avenue, offers an expansive restaurant menu and impressive bar offerings to all eaters.

As its title suggests, the storefront is made entirely out of glass, which might seem cheesy from the outside, but is actually pretty charming once inside. The downstairs features a large bar with a ton of table seating. The bar itself offers many beers on tap and by bottle, but most importantly, a great selection of nosh.

The most notable food item that Glass House Tavern offers is crispy truffle risotto balls with a truffle essence and Parmesan cheese dipping sauce. The dish comes with six risotto balls, which is an optimal portion for sharing with a friend.

Unlike the usual suspects offered on most bar menus, Glass House Tavern's risotto balls are the best. Since risotto is such a delicate food, it's amazing that it can keep its precise consistency inside a fried shell. The result is wonderful. The fried shell is perfectly crunchy, and not overly greasy like most deep fried bar food. And since it has a risotto filling, eaters get some nice varying textures (crunchy and creamy).

Try Glass House Tavern as a pre-theater restaurant or quick eat for theater-goers or tourists, but don't be surprised to see a local there for a drink and a bite.
