Tehuitzingo Deli Grocery: Great Mexican Food in Hell's Kitchen
With the overflow of Americanized Tex-Mex establishments in New York City, it's sometimes easy to forget that Mexican food isn't about ostentatious high-volume Mariachi music and screaming college girls sipping $15 margaritas. In fact, Mexican food should be about as bare bones as food can be--and tacos in particular. At Tehuitzingo Deli Grocery, foodies looking for their Mexican fix will be right at home.
The modest deli/grocery is located on the often ignored 10th Avenue, and its name, "Tehuitzingo," certainly doesn't have a ring to it--at least not for "gringos." Whatever is lost in translation is cured by the worldly language of good eats. Tehuitzingo offers chicken, steak, pork, chorizo, goat and many other taco options. The eatery also offers traditional sopes, which are essentially thick tortillas made out of fried cornmeal dough soaked in lime, and topped with a variety of meat and vegetables.
Regardless of what you order, you will not be disappointed. Tehuitzingo's tortillas are homemade, and their taco filling are moist and fried up to perfection. Make sure to wash it all down with a classic Jarritos soda (a favorite is Tamarind).
Taco Prices: $2.50-$2.75 (per taco)
Note: if you live or work in the area, they have free delivery.
