America Ferrera to Star on the New York and London Stage

Fans of the prematurely-departed television series Ugly Betty the world over now have something to rejoice about. "Betty" herself, America Ferrera, has recently signed on to star in not one but two major theatrical productions.

Broadway.com reports:

"Ferrera is… planning to make her Broadway debut in spring 2012 in a revival of Beth Henley’s 1984 comedy The Miss Firecracker Contest. The play, which was first produced by Manhattan Theatre Club in an off-Broadway production starring Holly Hunter, centers on Carnelle Scott, a Mississippi woman who enters a small-town beauty pageant. Hunter reprised her starring role in a 1989 film version of the play. EW is reporting that the Broadway production, to be helmed by Judith Ivey, will begin rehearsals in March; no details about a possible theater, producers or creative team members have been revealed."

But that's not all! Beginning November 7, 2011, Ferrera will play the iconic role of Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago at London's Garrick Theatre. The production, which enjoyed an extended run at the Cambridge Theatre, has been on hiatus since late August and Ferrera will headline the re-opening cast. Amra-Faye Wright, who is currently starring in the Broadway production, will play opposite Ferrera as Velma Kelly.

Though it was the 2006 television premiere of Ugly Betty that made Ferrera a household name, she has been acting professionally since she made her feature film debut at the age of 18 in the 2002 film Real Women Have Curves. Her other notable film roles include Blanca in How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer, Thunder Monkey in Lords of Dogtown, and Carmen in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. She made her off-Broadway debut in Dog Sees God.
