Best New Broadway Shows for Fall 2011
During the 2010-11 Broadway season, record-breaking Broadway crowds converted to fans of "The Book Of Mormon," cruised into see "Anything Goes" and were caught in the web of "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark," which took the greeting "break a leg" way too literally.
Some of the new Broadway shows for Fall 2011 listed below will emerge as hits, while others will become the "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson" or "The Scottsboro Boys" of the new season. Be they hit or miss stage productions, these new Fall 2011 Broadway shows have no shortage of star power, compelling scripts and Broadway hype.

September
"Follies," a revival of the James Goldman/Stephen Sondheim musical, explores the relationship conflicts of the members of a musical revue who reunite around the demolition of a theater. It stars Bernadette Peters. "Follies" has already started previews at the Marquis Theater. It opened on Sept. 12.
October
"Man and Boy," starring Frank Langella as a wily businessman who must reconcile with his estranged son to save his company, is a drama written by the late Terence Rattigan. "Man and Boy" starts previews on Sept. 9 at the American Airlines Theater. It opens Oct. 9.
"The Mountaintop," starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett, is a play set on the night before the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. "The Mountaintop" begins previews Sept. 22 at Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. It opens Oct. 13.
"Relatively Speaking" brings three one-act plays by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May to Broadway. It stars Steve Guttenberg, Marlo Thomas and others. "Relatively Speaking" opens Oct. 20 at the Brooks Atkinson Theater.
"Chinglish," a comedy stage production featuring an American businessman whose best intentions get lost in translation, begins previews on Oct. 11 at the Longacre Theater. "Chinglish" is expected to open later in October.
"Born Yesterday" star Nina Arianda takes a new role in "Venus in Fur" as an actress who is pursuing a role in a play that is based on a classic erotic novel. It starts previews on Oct. 13 at the Friedman Theater. "Venus in Fur" opens later this fall.
November
Stockard Channing, Stacy Keach, Judith Light, Thomas Sadoski and Rachel Griffiths make up the star-studded cast of "Other Desert Cities." The plot of the drama features a novelist returning to her Palm Springs home to celebrate Christmas with her parents, who were deeply involved with the family and administration of former President Ronald Reagan. Previews begin Oct. 12 at the Booth Theater. "Other Desert Cities" opens Nov. 3.
A revival of Stephen Schwartz's "Godspell," based on "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," begins previews on Oct. 13 at Circle in the Square. "Godspell" opens Nov. 7.
"Seminar," starring British actor Alan Rickman as a literary giant teaching the art of writing, begins previews on Oct. 27 at the Golden Theater. "Seminar" opens Nov. 20.
Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin bring famous Broadway songs back during "An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin." It opens Nov. 16 at the Barrymore Theater.
The Noel Coward comedy stage play "Private Lives," starring Kim Cattrall, begins previews on Nov. 6 at the Music Box Theater. "Private Lives" opens Nov. 17.
Austin Pendleton directs "Detroit," the story of two families and their struggles in suburban Detroit. The show will open in the fall at a theater to be announced.
December
The complete cast of the off-Broadway production of "Lysistrata Jones" will appear when the musical opens on Broadway this fall. The show, which is a modern, basketball-laced adaptation of Aristophanes' comic classic "Lysistrata," begins previews Nov. 12 at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre. "Lysistrata Jones" opens Dec. 14.
Singer, songwriter Alicia Keys, whose voice belts out the chorus of Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," presents "Stick Fly," a play about a woman who is meeting her fiancee's family for the first time. Previews begin Nov. 18 at Cort Theatre. 18, "Stick Fly" opens Dec. 8.
Singer and actor Harry Connick Jr. brings a new twist to "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," a musical about love transcending time and physical embodiment. The show begins previews Nov. 12 at St. James Theatre. "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" opens Dec. 11.
