Complete Casting Announced for Newsies
As I reported back in November, the stage adaptation of Newsies will make its Broadway premiere at the Nederlander Theatre this March. And the casting has finally been announced!
Jeremy Jordan will reprise the role of Jack Kelly, the role he played in the Papermill Playhouse production. Up until last month, Jordan was starring in the lead role of Clyde in the Broadway musical Bonnie & Clyde. Joining Jordan in Newsies will be his Papermill co-stars John Dossett (Gypsy) as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay (Little House on the Prairie) as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser (Spring Awakening) as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Mary Poppins) as Crutchie, and Capathia Jenkins (The Civil War) as Medda. Additionally, child actors Lewis Grosso (Mary Poppins) and Matthew Schechter (Elf) will share the role of Les.
The Newsies ensemble will include Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.
The 1992 musical film Newsies, set in 1899, starred Christian Bale, Max Casella, and numerous others as singing, dancing newsboys/orphans who stage a protest against the newspaper giants, including Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The film also starred Bill Pullman, Ann-Margaret, and Robert Duvall.
The stage version of Newsies debuted this fall at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse. Their intention was to branch out from there to mainly regional and school productions, but the masses of audience members who traveled from New York to New Jersey to see the show demanded otherwise. Disney soon realized what a potential hit they had on their hands and decided to come to Broadway.
Previews for Newsies will begin March 15, 2012. An official opening is scheduled for March 29, and the limited run is currently scheduled to close June 10.
