Great Shows for Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is only a month away, people! And you know what makes an awesome gift/date night? A Broadway show. Here are some great shows for V-Day, whether you're on a first date or been married for 50 years.
The Book of Mormon
Who says Valentine's Day has to be filled with romantic poems and marriage proposals and super-serious declarations of eternal love? One of the best parts of being in a relationship is getting to have fun with your partner. If you are a couple who loves to laugh, particularly at un-PC-yet-amazingly-clever jokes, go see The Book of Mormon. From the creators of South Park and Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon is the hilarious story of two young American Mormons on their mission in Uganda. You can't go wrong with this show-everyone loves it, including the Tony Award voters, who gave it nine awards.
Porgy and Bess
What's better than a tear-jerking love story to make you appreciate the love in your own life? Porgy and Bess, starring the incomparable Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis, tells the beautiful yet tragic story of a crippled beggar and a drug-addicted prostitute in 1930s Charleston. Gershwin's classic opera, which features the famous song "Summertime," has been adapted for the Broadway stage in a whole new way, and it's the perfect date show. But be sure to bring tissues.
Stick Fly
Just be glad you're spending Valentine's Day at a Broadway show and not meeting your significant other's parents for the first time. That's the general plot of Stick Fly, although things get infinitely more complicated when the in-laws find out that one of their sons' new girlfriends is white. Stick Fly is a straight play, not a musical, but it features original music by Alicia Keys, who is also one of the play's producers.
Time is running out, so buy your Valentine's Day tickets soon! And flowers would be good, too.
