Weekly Broadway Grosses: Spider-Man is Flying High

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is always a big money-maker for Broadway, as there are so many tourists in town to see the Rockefeller Center tree, watch the ball drop in Times Square, and celebrate the holidays in New York style. 18 shows earned over one million dollars last week, and several even added a ninth performance to accommodate the eager crowds. But it was Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark that reigned king the final week of December, as the show broke the record for the highest single-week gross in the history of Broadway!

Other shows didn't have quite as good a week as Spider-Man (or Wicked, Hugh Jackman or How to Succeed... for that matter): Bonnie and Clyde, Private Lives, and The Addams Family each played their final performances last week.
