Music Mondays: Happy MLK Day!
HAPPY MLK DAY! Hopefully your job likes you and gave you the day off and you are enjoying this sunny winter day. As you take a moment to reflect on what a monumental man MLK was, remember that it's also MM (woot). So, today we want to honor the legend of Martin Luther King Jr. with a special song from U2 - Pride (In The Name of Love). How far we've come since the days of fighting for equality and rights, kind of.
Well, let's get you the daily MM fix of Indie, Dance, Hip Hop, and Funk. I just heard this song over the weekend, and loved it, especially the title "F***ING BEST SONG EVERR" by Wallpaper. Hopefully, you enjoy it too (or at least get a kick out of the title). Another new discovery that I'd love to share with you Music Mondayers is a song by Walk the Moon - Anna Sun. This song seriously rules. The pick-up of the beat as the verse kicks in brings me joy, so it's meant for sharing. The lyrics are dismal, but so what when matched with awesome instrumentals?
Moving forward, we got some hip hop for you all! T.I. is baaaack, in case you weren't aware, oh and he's teaming up with Pharrell (aka SK8brd) with the track "Here Ye, Hear Ye". You go T.I., making your life better and stuff after getting out of prison. Do your thing, brother. As for the rebels, is anyone else as obsessed with this song by Meek Mill as I am? You've probably heard it in every house you were at this New Years, but "House Party" by Meek Mill and Young Chris is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Oh yeah, and we've of course got the latest from Frank Ocean with Kanye West and Jay Z.
We're also including "Shot Caller" by French Montana and Charlie Rock, a track sampled from "A Theme For L.A.'s Team" by The Thom Bell Orchestra. But, if you're like me and you're all like "WHY do I know this trumpet sample, and why do I feel like I know it?", well it's actually because it was also featured on a song from 1992 by Lords of the Underground - "Funky Child"! There, mystery solved, and included in today's mix. We have a healthy amount of hip hop for you today, so listen in small servings.
One of my favorite new artists, Azealia Banks, has teamed up with Machinedrum this week for a new track "NEEDSUMLUV". Let's slow it down a little, listen to this beautiful song by Kina Grannis - "In Your Arms". Seriously, it's going to melt your heart, Kina is adorable.
Did you watch the premiere of One Tree Hill last week? If you did, you probably heard this heart-clenching song by Blind Pilot - "New York". This one holds a special place in our hearts, for obvious reasons ;).
If you are a fan of The Black Keys, then you might enjoy this next song by Wolfmother - Woman. It is reminiscent of them, and if I like it, you probably will too. But - better than the original (mark my words) is the remix by MSTRKRFT). We've included the remix for your listening enjoyment.
