Take the Hunger Out of Museum Trips

For us, an hour or two is all we can spend touring some of the most popular, and inspirational, museums in New York. It's not that we don't love the art, sculpture and general awesomeness, but after a bit, we need a change of scenery -- and some fuel. After reading this cool article on wheretoeatonyournextmuseumtrip, which includes some great dining suggestions at some of the most popular museums in the city, it makes us want to spend the day walking through the various points of interest in NYC knowing that they'll be a way to break up the visit.

While there's high end dining at the MOMA and Whitney Museum of American Art, the museum and dining combination that we want to focus on is the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which holds great tenement and neighborhood walking tours. I went on one about a year ago, which explored a tenement building that was boarded up for years and left in almost perfect (historically accurate) condition. But what I didn't realize that you can also sign up for a tour entitled "Foods of the Lower East Side." It's a two-hour walking and tasting tour of the area that cost $45 a person, held on Fridays and Saturdays. While a good time can be dependent on the weather outside, it's a great way to make a trip to a museum really fun, entertaining, and of course, active. Besides walking the streets, you'll also get to stop along the way to sample the (culinary) goods, which include Chinese dumplings, Dominican plantains and German pretzels.

Our picks for the best (and healthiest) neighborhood noshes? KumaInn on Ludlow Street, which serves Filipino cuisine and is gluten-free. While it's a bit of a hike north from the LES neighborhood where the tours take place, we also recommend vegetarian joint DirtCandy in the East Village.
