Thanksgiving Takeout & Healthy Turkey Tips
I wish I was one of those people who could make a flawless (and relatively healthy) Thanksgiving dinner. A number of factors, including a small NYC apartment and the fact that I spend the holiday at a family member's house out of state means that I am usually off the hook. But recently on the food site Serious Eats, I found a great listing of restaurants and markets that offer Thanksgiving takeout deals. It got me thinking about where I would order from if I were in New York without a kitchen or celebrating the holiday if I were from out of town. A few of the delicious suggestions include Whole Foods, Citarella and Fairway.
At the Bowery Whole Foods location, a complete Thanksgiving dinner for four runs about $90, and is relatively healthy with cooked herb-roasted turkey breast, stuffing and mashed potatoes as the centerpieces for the meal. At Citarella, the meal is a bit pricier -- $159 -- but this Thanksgiving feast includes turkey, two different types of potatoes, stuffing, soup, vegetables, pumpkin pie, and more; or, you can get this menu a la carte. Stick to white meat and resist overindulging on the pie, sweet potato pralines and pumpkin-porcini risotto. (Of course try it! Just don't try 50 forkfuls...). At Fairway, the Thanksgiving meal is a similar deal to Citarella, but may we suggest getting many of the dishes a la carte in order to make the most out of the fresh produce that this great New York store has to offer. Before you chow down on your home-cooked meal or takeout option, remember a few of these tips:
-Add a green vegetable to your Thanksgiving meal. Brussels sprouts, broccoli or asparagus are great options.
-Try one bite of every dessert instead of a full serving.
-Since turkey will take center stage for most, drink alcohol in moderation -- this will regulate calorie consumption, and make you feel less sleepy at the end of your meal!
-Take a walk. It's a great way to catch-up with family and friends while getting exercise.
Happy Thanksgiving!
