True Pilates New York: Private Session Experience

I don't think I've been to a personal training session in years. That's why when I went for my personal Pilates session at True Pilates last week, the thought of working one on one with a trainer was exciting, albeit daunting. But during my session, I was paired with an instructor who was very relaxed and super knowledgeable. One fun fact I learned about becoming a Pilates instructor during my session? Comprehensive certifications usually take ~14 months to complete and often require many hours spent in the studio as an apprentice teacher. How many? Up to 900!

While I've been in more intensive Pilates classes in the past, both mat and reformer, this private session was an opportunity where I could truly go back to basics with no judgement, focusing on form when doing reformer core, lower and upper body exercises, as well as essential stretches. Everything from leg presses focuses on proper (non-tight) shoulder positioning, relaxing the lower back while still working your core, and stabilizing my body while I worked on core reformer exercises and leg extensions, were fair game. The experience of being unable to hide behind another student while performing a move that you aren't 100 percent comfortable with is eye opening. While at first the idea of having someone so closely attuned to your form is kind of daunting, in many instances, a tiny tweak to my form on core reformer exercises easily translated into better mat and lower body form.

I immediately booked a follow up session (which comes as part of my private session package) with a Pilates apprentice at the same studio next week. Now that I know a bit more about what to expect (and the grueling process they undergo to make it as a certified instructor), I'm looking forward to seeing what other Pilates tips she has to offer (so I can share them with you, of course!)
