Bars and Nightlife in the Meatpacking District

The Meatpacking District is a stylish playground of upscale bars, down-tempo lounges and nightclubs. The Meatpacking District is the 'it' scene in New York and a melting pot of punk rockers, indie kids, young professionals, celebrities and anyone looking for an adventurous and high-energy night in New York.

A night out in the Meatpacking District should begin at one of these more laid-back establishments:

The Ajna Bar, formerly the Buddha Bar, is a casual restaurant and lounge. The food is Asian and French influenced. The interior is softly lit and comfortable and the Asian decor matches the food.

The Ara Wine Bar has a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Its low, humming music makes it a great place for an after-work conversation. The Ara Wine Bar has an extensive list of eclectic, mid-priced wines and tapas-styled bites to eat.

Gaslight is another nightlife option. The dark wood interior and antiquarian furniture give Gaslight an English drawing room ambiance; this is further enhanced by the fireplaces that are lit in the winter. During the summer months, however, Gaslight has a set of French doors that open to the street, making it a great place to people watch. After dinner and cocktails, there is no shortage of places to go dancing in the Meatpacking District.

The Bunker Club is more toned-down than some of the other clubs in New York. Located in a former foundry beneath 9th Avenue, it features black and white checkered floors, a disco ball, and nightly DJs. The Bunker Club is stylish and trendy without being overblown with attitude.

No night out in the Meatpacking District is complete without a visit to Le Bain. Eighteen floors above the Meatpacking District, Le Bain is a rooftop club with an unparalleled view of New York City.

Banking on the nostalgia for the seedier days of the Meatpacking District, Gunbar is a retro-punk nightclub. A dark flight of stairs leads down to a subterranean dance floor. Graffiti is scrawled on the walls and the DJ spins New Wave classics, recreating the late '70s and early '80s nightlife.

For the young and fabulous, try The Griffin, Tenjune, Cielo and Kiss and Fly.
