Bars and Clubs in Harlem
Located at the top of Manhattan, Harlem is a neighborhood best known for its presence as a center of African-American culture. In the 1920s and '30s, Harlem was the center of a cultural movement in music and art known as the Harlem Renaissance; the neighborhood also went on to play a central role in the American Civil Rights movement.
Today, Harlem's cultural spirit lives on, especially in its nightlife scene. Harlem is home to some of the best nightlife in New York City. Here's a glance at some of the best bars and lounges located throughout the neighborhood of Harlem.
Central Harlem
Apollo Theater
For endless drinks and laughs, stop by the Apollo Theater. Built in the early 20th century, the Apollo is now an official New York City landmark, as well as one of the best comedy clubs in Manhattan. The Apollo regularly plays host to some great comedy as well as live music. If you want to see the crowd get rowdy, stop by on Amateur Night, held every Wednesday. The Apollo is famous for its Amateur Night, where a slew of hilarious comedians and hacks alike take to the stage, and the Apollo crowd isn't afraid to let the performers know how they feel.
American Legion Post 398
To catch a glimpse of the Harlem jazz scene, check out American Legion Post 398. This little dive bar is packed tightly in the basement of one of Harlem's classic brownstone buildings just west of 7th Avenue on 132nd Street. However, don't let the size fool you: American Legion Post 398 houses some of Harlem's best live jazz performances. It has a wide selection of soul food to really set the mood, as well as a full bar to wash it down.
West Harlem
Showman's
The Harlem jazz scene also thrives at Showman's, located on 125 Street, between Morningside and Manhattan avenues. Showman's offers a laid-back, retro vibe and great jazz performances, making it the perfect place to experience an older spirit of Harlem. Showman's has a full bar and plenty of indoor seating so you can relax with a drink and get into the music.
Toast
If you're in the mood for good food and drinks, hop over to Toast. Located in the south end of West Harlem between Tiemman and LaSalle Street, Toast is a self-proclaimed "truckstop gourmet." They offer a wide selection of classic American food – wings, fries, and burgers, including veggie options – as well as over 15 varieties of draft beer.
El Morocco
Care to dance? If so, give El Morocco club and lounge a try. Located on the corner of Broadway and 145th, El Morocco is a dance club that captures the Latin spirit of Harlem. Aside from good music and dancing, El Morocco is a recreation of the original El Morocco club of the 1930s. True to its roots, El Morocco occasionally hosts off-Broadway shows, as well as live Latin-themed entertainment.
