Best-Kept Beauty Secret: Love & Beauty by Forever 21

When fashion brands turn out a line of beauty products, it is often poorly thought-out, not very thorough, and/or overpriced. When I first saw that Forever 21 was selling nail polishes and other cosmetics in little plastic bins in their accessories department, I turned away quickly and refused to give it a try. But as the collection grew with the introduction of a fun name, "Love & Beauty," then landed itself a full wall at the Union Square location, I became enticed by the pretty packaging and myriad color options, and decided to check it out.

First things first, the pricing is amazing. Nail polish averages $2.80 a bottle, face masks and lip glosses are $1.80, a glittering liquid liner three-pack is $4.80, and so on. With prices like these, you can feel totally free to indulge and try out a bunch of different products. But they're not just affordable; they comprise a bona fide beauty line that every New York girl can utilize to supplement her stash. Of everything I've tried, the only product I didn't love is a tweezer and rhinestone compact set; while the compact is perfect for the purse and so far I haven't lost a single stone, the tweezer doesn't actually tweeze. Aside from that one blunder, though, all my Love & Beauty purchases have been successful.

Their nail collection alone is enough to make you stop and stare (and massively expand your polish collection). Love & Beauty offers about 150 color options in fun and fitting names like "Pink Taffeta" and "Terra Cotta." They also have hit up all the current trends in nail care from matte polish to super-glittery, pearlescent, and trendy blue-to name a few. Some colors are only $1.50; none are over $3. They also have glue-on nail sets with polka dots, flowers, and other fun patterns at $1.50 a pack. A hot pink zebra print hairbrush is $3.80; chic rhinestone-encrusted lash curler available in three girl-power colors is $2.80. A travel compact with lipstick print allover is perfectly flirty-to grab you a little male attention when pulling off a last-minute lipstick touch-up on the subway.
