Brrr Basics

The weather has been seriously cold, and though we all admit to having been spoiled with milder temperatures earlier in the winter, many of us feel unprepared. So, how to warm up without looking like a (cold weather) fashion victim? Update your current pieces with warmer accessories, and shop around for the perfect winter basics that will do the trick.

If you've been bombing around town in your Hunter wellies since fall, it's time to warm them up. While these boots are a great option for keeping rain (and slushy snow) away from your tootsies, they do little to insulate you from the cold. Rather than wearing too many pairs of bulky wool socks under yours, invest in a pair of Hunter socks. The cable knit variety are especially cute (and yes, guys, you can get away with them, too!). The darker your pair, the better, as they won't show any inadvertant mud stains should dirty New York snow start to appear on the sidewalks. Under yours, just wear a regular pair of athletic socks. You'll be warm, comfy, and ready to face the day--whatever Mother Nature has in store. Socks vary in price depending on style; $20-65, hunter-boot.com.

Seasonal depression is a common problem, and many of us succomb by donning dark colors and blah basics to match the way we feel. Try an instant winter pick-me-up like a wool sweater in a bright color to make up for a lack of sunshine. With bright colors still big from last summer, many retailers translated the trend into their winter selections. Men can opt for a brick or royal purple sweater for a pop of much-needed color. This cashmere v-neck from J. Crew is $99, and with 7 different color options, it will definitely brighten up your winter duds. Or, splurge on a plaid accessory like a cashmere Burberry "mega check" scarf in indigo with yellow ($475, burberry.com) to give any outfit a quick boost. Women can get away with hot pink knits or a pair of bright-hued ear muffs. I'm loving this "marachino cherry" cardi from J. Crew for $62.These pink-and-black striped ear muffs from Juicy Couture are on sale at Zappo's (zappos.com) for $39.99. They are a cheerful option that will match your dark coat but make you smile for a hint of pink.

A fleece from The North Face is another investment you should consider, if you don't already own one. These slim, super-warm jackets make a great layering piece under your favorite puffer and will carry you through into spring, too, when you can wear them without an outer layer. Additionally, they are practically indestructable, so you'll be wearing yours for seasons to come. Some are priced as low as $99, which definitely makes this a must-buy item. And remember, a fun color makes for a bright, better day! thenorthface.com.
