The Importance of Color
Sometimes, it can seem like guys get the short end of the style stick. While women have endless choices (skinny jeans! flirty dresses! high heels!), there is no denying that men have far fewer silhouettes and accessories to play with. This is exactly why it has become important (especially in sartorially fabulous cities like New York) for the boys to add interest where they can. A great place to start? Color!
Notice how the fashion-literate dude in this photo is sporting a completely classic look from double-breasted blazer to well-fitting pants and a simple dress shoe? His plain black shades and business-like slicked back hair, white collared shirt and watch are all completely in keeping with the norm. But the bright yellow color of his pants, playful blue elbow patches and yellow buttons on his jacket make him an absolute style standout. He looks so much better than every other guy in the shot, and since this is a fashion crowd, most of them are probably headed to the same event. Bright colors can truly make a statement, it's just important to keep the balance. By incorporating clothes that are cut in classic styles, he gets away with plenty of color without looking the least bit silly.
So, how to pull off the bright approach this winter without taking the trend too far? Stick with brands known for their unyielding adherence to structured tailoring. Brooks Brothers, Thomas Pink, and Burberry are solid choices. Build an outfit utilizing slim-fit pants, a fitted sweater over a button-down, or a blazer with a tee. Keep shoes plain yet stylish if you are opting for bright pants. Pick one item in a bold hue, and watch heads turn.
