The 2011 New York Sports Year in Review
For a city with so many sports teams under its umbrella, a year's time will inevitably present a number of highs and lows. Different fan bases will have different takes on the year's results based on their own team's fortunes or misfortunes.
So let's look back on the year that was in New York sports, with the wins and the losses, the milestones and the records and the altogether hard to relive:
January 23: The New York Jets reached a second-straight AFC championship game, only to come up short yet again as they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
February 21: Carmelo Anthony is formally announced as a New York Knick after being traded from the Denver Nuggets to the Knicks in return for a bundle of players that included Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first round pick in 2014.
February 24: The New Jersey Nets officially announced Deron Williams as their newest member, who was traded from the Utah Jazz.
April 4: The UConn Huskies cut down the nets in Houston after defeating Butler to win the NCAA men's basketball championship.
April 23: The New York Rangers fell at the hands of the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 2011 NHL Playoffs. The Rangers lost the five-game series 3-1.
April 24: In what was a rough week for New York, the Boston Celtics completed their four-game sweep of the Knicks in the first round of the 2011 NBA playoffs.
July 9: Captain Clutch, Derek Jeter, reached the 3,000-hit club in style. In a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, Jeter launched a home run in the third inning to reach the milestone.
Week of July 26: Capping off a fire-sale for the Mets, relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez and outfielder Carlos Beltran were dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants, respectively.
July 31: Plaxico Burress was released from prison after serving a multiple-year sentence for a handgun incident at a nightclub. Burress decided to sign with the Jets after winning a Super Bowl with the Giants.
August 1: Voters did not approve of a $400 million bond issue that would have funded a much-needed replacement of the Nassau Coliseum.
September 19: Yankees closer Mariano Rivera added another notch to a legendary career by collecting his 602nd save against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium, making him the all-time leader in saves.
September 26: Jay-Z officially announces the new NBA team in Brooklyn will keep its "Nets" name.
October 6: The Yankees bowed out of the first round of the 2011 MLB playoffs after losing a deciding game 5 to the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
October 27: Madison Square Garden re-opened for hockey after undergoing the first phase of its multi-year renovation.
November 26: The NBA lockout is announced to be over, paving the way for a 66-game schedule that started on Christmas Day.
December 8: In what was a devastating blow to Mets fans, Jose Reyes signed an enormous contract to play for the division rival Miami Marlins.
December 24: The Giants defeated the Jets at MetLife Stadium, essentially eliminating the Jets' playoff hopes while setting Big Blue up for a one-game playoff against the Cowboys.
December 25: The Knicks defeated the Boston Celtics in the season-opener at MSG, 106-104.
