Things to be Thankful for as a New York Sports Fan
As we all gather around the Thanksgiving table to chow down and relay heartfelt (and not so heartfelt) platitudes about what we are thankful for this year, it's high time to do the same when it comes to New York sports.
So here is a list of things for which New York sports fan should be thankful:
- The number of teams to root for in the area. Sure, it's annoying that the NBA is locked out. But there are so many other teams to root for. You've got three area hockey teams and two NFL teams all competing at the same time, plus two baseball teams and another NBA team that will soon be in Brooklyn. And if one of your teams isn't playing well, chances are there's at least a competitive team playing nearby, even if it means rooting against them (the Yankees).
- Rex Ryan's filter-less quotes. He gets a lot of flak for it from plenty of fans and members of the media (including me), but Rex never makes it boring, and always gives us something to talk about.
- Jake Ballard. He had a tough game against the Eagles, but had Ballard not made a couple tough catches against the Patriots three weeks ago, the Giants would be mired in a three-game losing streak and in even more of a free-fall than most fans currently think the team is in.
- Citi Field's new dimensions. The Mets might stink in 2012, but at least there will be more home runs!
- Boomer and Carton in the Morning. There are a ton of options for New Yorkers to get their sport radio fix, but WFAN's Eric Carton and Boomer Esiason are the cream of the crop. If you don't tune in to the show each morning, you are missing out on your daily dose of entertainment.
- The Steinbrenners. Because without the Yankees, what would baseball in New York look like? Seriously, though, the commitment the family has made to winning is something most baseball fans wish they had in their teams' owners. The Yankees are the envy of baseball, and Yankee fans wouldn't have it any other way.
- Isiah Thomas. Just kidding.
- James Dolan. Kidding again!
- Martin Brodeur. Devils fans have been so accustomed to seeing Brodeur between the pipes that it's hard to imagine one day seeing another starting goalie game in and game out. For as long as Brodeur continues his hall-of-fame career, Devils fans must appreciate the excellence they've witnessed for so long.
- Renovations to the Garden. Because we don't want another Shea Stadium, do we? Early reviews from the Garden have been positive, even though the next few years will see many more changes.
- Derek Jeter. Love him or hate him, unless a scandal arises involving Jeter some day, be thankful that a star player has finally done things the right way.
- Chris Paul (a year from now?!). We can hope, right?
Happy Thanksgiving!!
