What We Learned: NFL Week 6
The Jets and the Giants were both victorious at home this weekend over AFC East opponents. The Giants hung on to beat the Buffalo Bills, while the Jets started out slowly against the Miami Dolphins, pulling away in the second half. Here's what we learned about both teams this week:
The Giants have to run the ball to win. Ahmad Bradshaw ran for over 100 yards and scored three touchdowns. Eli Manning threw zero interceptions. Coincidence? I think not. When the Giants come out firing through the air, it seems that Manning often struggles. When the Giants commit to the run game, Manning seems to play well. This is not anything new, but the Giants don't always seem to listen. Bradshaw is a top-10 back; the Giants need to utilize him.
Plaxico Burress is not the same receiver as he was before he went to jail. And he may never be again. When Burress signed with the Jets before the season, there was a great deal of excitement. Words like "steal" and "bargain" were thrown around with reckless abandon. Now? There are probably some Jets fans who wish the team traded Burress instead of Derrick Mason. Burress is dropping passes on a quarterly basis, and was seen dogging it on a couple plays against the Dolphins. Not a great way to make yourself a favorite target of your QB.
The Giants defense can be good. But it can also be so, so bad. We got to see the "Tom Coughlin Face" on the face of Tom Coughlin early and often on Sunday. A couple of big, big plays made the Giants defense look foolish at times. On the heels of a poor performance against Seattle's slew of terrible QBs, it wasn't the response most fans were hoping to see. But the defense made some big plays when they needed to, none bigger than Corey Webster's second interception. But in order to stay in first in the NFC East, the defense is going to need to make giant improvements during the bye week.
Darrelle Revis hasn't lost a step. Everyone knows how good Revis is. But his skills were on full display Monday night against the Dolphins. Sure, Brandon Marshall dropped a couple of big passes, but how many teams would leave Marshall single-covered all night? Revis responded with two interceptions, including a pick-six from his own end zone. Marshall is the latest receiver to end up on Revis Island. There's no doubt he won't be the last.
Bonus Knowledge: The Dolphins are really, really, really bad. Did you see that game on Monday? The dropped passes? Poor tackling? Lack of a pass rush? I thought so.
