‘After Midnight’ Dances Off with the Astaire Awards

The Cotton Club revue After Midnight, totally swept the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, presented for excellence in dancing and choreography on Broadway, on June 2 at the NYU Skirball Center. Midnight which had racked up a total of eight nominations, won all three competitive categories. Dormeshia Sumby Edwards and Karine Plantadit tied for Outstanding Female Dancer while Jared Grimes took Outstanding Male Dancer. Warren Carlyle, who already won Outer Critics and Drama Desk Awards, won for Outstanding Choreography.

Five-time Tony nominee and two-time Emmy winning choreographer Patricia Birch received the Douglas Watt Lifetime Acheivement Award and dance instructor Luigi was honored with the Outstanding Achievement in the Preservation of Musical Theatre Award. Presenters included director-producer Harold Prince, Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago), Susan Stroman (The Producers, Bullets Over Broadway), Karen Ziemba (Bullets Over Broadway), Valerie Harper (Rhoda, Looped), Joe Morton (Scandal), Maksim Chmerkovskiy (Dancing with the Stars), Stephen DeRosa (Boardwalk Empire), Sandy Duncan and Don Correia.
