‘After Midnight’ Leads Astaire Award Nominations

After Midnight, the revue celebrating Duke Ellington’s tenure as bandleader at the legendary Cotton Club, has received the most nominations for the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, presented for excellence in dancing and choreography on Broadway. Midnight has racked up a total of eight nominations, seven for its dancers and one for its choreographer Warren Carlyle. Also included in the nominees’ list are Neil Patrick Harris of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Andy Karl of Rocky, and director-choreographers Susan Stroman (Bullets Over Broadway) and Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin). The awards will be presented on June 2 at the NYU Skirball Center. At the ceremony, five-time Tony nominee and two-time Emmy winning choreographer Patricia Birch will receive the Douglas Watt Lifetime Achievement Award and dance instructor Luigi will be honored with the Outstanding Achievement in the Preservation of Musical Theatre Award.
