Oscar nominee Annette Bening joins Emmy and Tony winner John Lithgow, in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of King Lear at the Delacorte Theatre.
This will be Bening’s first New York stage appearance since Spoils of War in 1988. She will play Goneril, the eldest daughter, opposite Lithgow’s Lear, her father. Also joining the cast are Tony nominee Jessica Hecht (A View from the Bridge) and Jessica Collins (Zero Dark Thirty), who will star as Regan and Cordelia, Goneril’s sisters. Additional cast members include Steven Boyer (Hand to God), Jay O. Sanders (The Apple Plays), Christopher Innvar (The Gershwins’s Porgy and Bess), and Clarke Peters (The Wire, Treme).
The production is directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan (Proof, The Merchant of Venice) and runs July 22 to Aug. 17, with an official opening of Aug. 5. The Delacorte season will begin with Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater playing the quarrelling lovers Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, running June 3-July 6.
