Tony and Drama Desk winner Laura Benanti will host the 59th annual Drama Desk Awards, to be held June 1st at Town Hall in Manhattan.
The Drama Desk is a group of New York-based theater reviewers, editors and reporters. Unlike the Tonys which only honor Broadway productions, these awards additionally cover Off- and Off-Off-Broadway in multiple categories. Nominations for the awards will be announced on April 25 at 54 Below.
“As host, Laura Benanti brings a winning combination to the stage—talent, beauty and a great sense of humor. We look forward to a great evening,” said Gretchen Shugart, CEO of Theatermania and Managing Executive Producer of the awards ceremony. Laura Benanti said “I am thrilled to bring my particular brand of idiocy to what is usually a very classy affair. #ForThePeopleByThePeople”
Benanti herself won the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics awards for her performance as Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy and a Drama Desk for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Other Broadway credits include In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), Into the Woods, Nine, Swing!, and The Sound of Music. She recently starred as Baroness Schraeder in NBC’s live broadcast of The Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood. Previous Drama Desk hosts have included other Broadway notables such as Harvey Fierstein, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth and Bernadette Peters.
Tickets for the ceremony are available to the general public at awards.dramadesk.org.
