Cast Shakeup for ‘Kinky Boots’

Tony-winner Billy Porter has extended his stay in Kinky Boots, but his two Tony-nominated co-stars will soon depart the smash-hit Broadway musical. Porter, who won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as the fabulous drag artist Lola, will be donning hip-high boots in the role until at least July 2014.

Stark Sands, who plays shoe factory owner Charlie Price, will leave the show on Jan. 26, 2014. Also departing will be Annaleigh Ashford from her part as Lauren, one of Charlie’s employees who develops a crush on him. She will be leaving in March 2014 to film the second season of Showtime’s Masters of Sex series. No replacements have been announced for the departing cast members.

Kinky Boots, featuring a score by rock icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage Aux Folles) opened April 4 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and went on to win six Tony Awards including Best Musical. For the week ending Dec. 1, the show grossed $1,912,568, breaking the house record for the Hirschfeld previously held by How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
