Dinner and a Show: Where to Eat Before ‘Kinky Boots’

Favorite for fashionista foodies

You’re going to see Kinky Boots at the Al Hirschfeld Theater and you need to know where to eat dinner beforehand? No problem! We’ve got a shoe-in option for dining before Broadway’s most stylin’ show.

The Show: Through the help of a drag performer, a fourth-generation shoe manufacturer figures out the key to saving the business his family had built: fetish footwear for men. The musical, based on a 2005 film by the same name, features an original score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. That power team helped the show earn six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score. Lauper, a newbie to Broadway, made history by becoming the first woman alone to win in that category, for songs such as the peppy “Everybody Say Yeah,” and the power-ballad “The Soul of a Man.” The performance, of course, culminates in a footwear runway show.

The Restaurant: The namesake at B. Smith’s, a fashionable restaurant just one block away, has seen plenty of runway action. The owner is Barbara Smith, a one-time cover girl who spun her success into a lifestyle brand. B. Smith restaurant opened on NYC’s Restaurant Row in 1986 and has been serving stylish Southern American food ever since.

What to Eat: Fried green tomatoes ($10) get a unique treatment with candied pecans and herb oil while the Swamp Thang ($22), a platter of sautéed shrimp, scallops and crawfish in Dijon cream sauce over collard greens, tastes a lot better than the name implies.

What Else to Know: Pre-theater hours happen to be happy hour, 5-8pm, when house cocktails, house wines and well martinis are $8; Coronas go for $5; and a selection of appetizers are $7.
