Drama League Nominees for 2013-14 Announced

Theater award season continues in New York as the nominees for the 80th annual Drama League Awards were announced on April 23 by two-time Tony winner Judith Light (Other Desert Cities, The Assembled Parties) and Tony nominee Christopher Seiber (Shrek, Monty Python’s Spamalot). Categories include Distinguished Production of a Play, Distinguished Production of a Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Play, Distinguished Revival of a Musical, and Distinguished Performance Award. The Drama League does not distinguish between musical or play with the acting award, and a long list of performers are eligible. An actor can only win this award once during his or her career. The revival of Cabaret is also left off the list of Distinguished Revival of a Musical nominees, since the 1998 revival won in this category. Leads Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams are eligible, though.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Broadway veteran and star of ABC’s hit sitcom Modern Family, will host the awards ceremony on May 16 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square in the Broadway Ballroom. Recipients of the Special Drama League Awards have already been announced. They are Tony winner and singing legend Barbara Cook for distinguished achievement in musical theater; Key Brand Entertainment/Broadway Across America for bringing New York productions to theaters across the country; and Tony winner John Tiffany (Once, The Glass Menegarie) for excellence in directing.

First presented in 1922 and formalized in 1935, the Drama League Awards are the oldest theatrical honor in America. They are the only major theatergoer awards chosen by audience members — specifically, by the thousands of Drama League members nationwide who attend Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
