Nothing beats seeing a Broadway show live on stage, but the sounds (if not the sights) can live forever through original cast albums. Many of this season’s new shows (and current Tony winners) have already released their albums, which are available for downloading on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon. We already took a look at the original cast album for Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, starring Tony winner Jessie Mueller. Here’s are some of the other hottest sounds of 2013-14 now available.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
Homicide have never sounded so funny as charming ne’er-do-well Monty Navarro finishes off all eight distant relatives who stand between him and the family fortune. The Tony winner for Best Musical features a dazzling score of inventive melody by Steven Lutvak and witty lyrics by Roger L. Freedman and Lutvak in the tradition of the intricate patter songs of Gilbert and Sullivan. Get tickets to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder on Broadway, and get the cast album here.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
You can experience the Tony-winning performances of Neil Patrick Harris and Lena Hall as the titular transgender German wanna-be punk star and her Estonian-Jewish husband Yitzhak. Stephen Trask’s blistering rock tunes blow the roof off the Belasco every night — and then continue the party at home (as long as the neighbors don’t complain). In this show, the phenomenal Idina Menzel explores two different versions of the life of one woman. On one track she is comically flummoxed after sleeping with the wrong man (“What the F**k”), and on another she copes with mixed emotions as her spouse leaves for Iraq (“I Hate You”). Here colossal performance is recorded along with the rest of the great cast including LaChanze, Anthony Rapp and James Snyder. The album debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200 chart. This was the highest debut for a cast recording since the 1996 release of Rent, which, of course, also starred Menzel and Rapp. Get tickets to If/Then on Broadway, and get the cast album here.
Bullets Over Broadway
The rip-roarin’ 1920s are evoked in Woody Allen’s wild comedy of backstage hijinks. The album is packed with vintage songs from the period such as “I’m Sitting on Top of the World,” “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You,” “Let’s Misbehave” and “Yes, We Have No Bananas” that all sound brand new. You may not be able to see the climactic boxing match through the speakers, but all the passion and courage of Rocky, Adrian and their South Philly pals come through in Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens’ score. Get tickets to Rocky on Broadway, and get the cast album here.
