Lucille Lortel Awards Presented to Off-Broadway’s Best

Fun Home, The Open House, and Here Lies Love were among the big winners at the 29th annual Lucille Lortel Awards, presented for excellence in Off-Broadway theater. Megan Mullalley (Will and Grace) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), currently co-starring Off-Broadway in Annapurna, hosted the ceremony at the NYU Skirball Center on May 4.

Fun Home, the musical based on Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical graphic novel, was named Outstanding Musical and won for Outstanding Actor and Featured Actress in a Musical (Michael Cerveris and Judy Kuhn). The Open House by Will Eno was chosen as Outstanding Play. The musicals Here Lies Love and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 also were in the winners’ circle. Both shows opened late last season, past the cut-off date for the 2013 Lortel nominations. Love, the environmental show based on the life of the notorious Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, won for Outstanding Director (Alex Timbers, currently represented on Broadway with Rocky), Actress in a Musical (Ruthie Ann Miles), Costume Design (in a tie with Natasha, Pierre), Lighting Design, and Sound Design. Love is currently playing a return engagement at the Public Theater. In addition to its win for costumes, Natasha, the musical based on a section of War and Peace, took home award for Featured Actor in a Musical (Lucas Steele) and Scenic Design.

Special awards were presented to producer Robyn Goodman (Avenue Q, Cinderella) and dramatist Richard Nelson (The Apple Family Plays at the Public Theater) who will have his name placed in a star on the Playwrights Walk of Fame in front of the Lortel Theater. The Lortels are presented by the Off-Broadway League and are named for the late producer and owner of the Theater De Lys which was later renamed in her honor.
