Lucy Liu (Elementary) and Jonathan Groff (Looking) will announce the nominees for the 2014 Tony Awards on April 29 at 8:30am from the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel. The event will be broadcast live on CBS This Morning, New York-1 News, and in their entirety on TonyAwards.com. Also in attendance will be William Ivey Long, chairman of the American Theatre Wing; Heather Hitchens, executive director of the American Theatre Wing; Nick Scandalios, chairman of the Broadway League; and Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League.
The number of shows eligible for Tony nominations may be higher this year, thanks to some changes from the Tony Rules Committee. Five shows could be nominated in the major categories, as opposed to the four that have been nominated in previous years.
Tony and Golden Globe winner Hugh Jackman (The Boy from Oz, Les Miserables) will be returning as host of the 68th Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on June 8. The event will be telecast on CBS.
In other theater award news, Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams, co-stars from last season’s The Trip to Bountiful, will announce the nominees for the Outer Critic Circle Awards at the Friars Club on April 22, and Tony winner Laura Benanti (Gypsy) will host the Drama Desk Awards at Town Hall on June 1.
