‘Mamma Mia!’ Becomes the 9th Longest-Running Show on Broadway

It’s a big day for Mamma Mia! The ABBA musical surpasses Rent to become the 9th longest-running show on Broadway today.

The show, which recently moved from the Winter Garden Theatre to the Broadhurst Theatre to make room for Rocky, opened in 2001 and has played for more than 5,000 performances on Broadway. The London production is celebrating its 15th year, and overall the show has been seen by more than 54 million people in more than 400 cities.

The popular musical is set on a sunny Greek island and tells the tale of a woman attempting to uncover the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding. The show includes such ABBA hits as “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance on Me.”

There are only three shows on Broadway right now that have been running longer than Mamma Mia! — The Phantom of the Opera (since 1988), Chicago (since 1996) and The Lion King (since 1997).
