More Shows Could Be Nominated for Tonys This Year
There may be more Tony Award nominations to go around this year. Previously, the number of nominees in the top categories of Best Play, Musical, Revival of a Play and Revival of a Musical is four, but that could go up to five. According to Variety, the Tony Rules Committee met last month and decided that there could be as many as five candidates in these top slots if there are at least nine eligible shows in each category. There will be an extra nominee if a fifth show receives an approximate number of votes from the Tony Nominating Committee to the fourth-highest contender. This is similar to the recent Academy Awards rule change when it was decided to expand the Best Picture Oscar nominees from the previous five to as many as ten.
“The number of shows eligible for the Tony Awards, both in the new and revival categories, will now vary based on the number of productions that open each season,” said a statement from Tony Awards Productions. “The Tony Award Administration Committee’s new ruling allows the Nominating Committee the flexibility to acknowledge the best of each season’s eligible shows.”
The rules do apply this season for most of the top categories. The total of new plays produced during the season is ten: Act One, All the Way, Bronx Bombers, Casa Valentina, Mothers and Sons, Outside Mullingar, The Realistic Joneses, The Snow Geese, A Time to Kill, and The Velocity of Autumn. In addition, The Cripple of Inishmaan and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, are making their Broadway debuts, but have been previously presented Off-Broadway, so they may be considered “new” under Tony guidelines.
The 12 new Broadway musicals are After Midnight, Aladdin, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Big Fish, The Bridges of Madison County, Bullets Over Broadway, First Date, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, If/Then, A Night with Janis Joplin, Rocky, and Soul Doctor.
Play revivals include 700 Sundays, Betrayal, The Glass Menagerie, Macbeth, Machinal, No Man’s Land, A Raisin in the Sun, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Waiting for Godot, and The Winslow Boy. There are only four Best Musical Revival candidates: Cabaret, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Les Miserables, and Violet. Both Hedwig and Violet have been done Off-Broadway, so they could be included in the Best Musical mix
The Tony nominations will be announced April 29 and the awards will be presented on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in a ceremony telecast on CBS and hosted by Tony winner Hugh Jackman.
