Four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein will have his first play in nearly 30 years presented on Broadway this spring.
Casa Valentina will begin previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater on April 1, 2014 in advance of an April 23 opening. The production, directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello (Wicked, Take Me Out), is part of Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2013-14 season. The cast and creative team will be announced in later weeks.
Based on actual events and set in 1962, Casa Valentina focuses on a Catskills resort which caters to a very special clientele—heterosexual men whose favorite pastime is dressing and living as women.
Fierstein has won Tonys in four different categories—Best Play and Actor in a Play (Torch Song Trilogy); Book of a Musical (La Cage Aux Folles); and Actor in a Musical (Hairspray). He has also written the books for Legs Diamond, A Catered Affair, Newsies, and Kinky Boots. As an actor, he has appeared in revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and La Cage and his own plays Torch Song Trilogy and Safe Sex, his last nonmusical Broadway play which had a short run in 1987.
Manhattan Theater Club’s season also includes The Snow Geese with Mary-Louise Parker; Outside Mullingar with Brian F. O’Bryne and Debra Messing; The Commons of Pensicola with Blythe Danner and Sarah Jessica Parker; Tales from Red Vienna; When We Were Young and Unafraid with Cherry Jones; and Taking Care of Baby.
