Outer Critic Circle Nominations Announced, with ‘Gentleman’s Guide’ Most Nominated

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, the delightfully diabolic musical about a would-be earl killing off distant relatives, has received the most nominations for the 64th Outer Critics Circle Awards with 11. The nominations were announced on April 22 by Cicely Tyson (The Trip to Bountiful) and Vanessa Williams (After Midnight) at the Friars Club. Also making strong showings were Disney’s Aladdin with eight, the Off-Broadway musical Fun Home with seven, and the stage version of Rocky with six. Notable by their absence were such big names as Daniel Radcliffe (The Cripple of Inishmaan), James Franco (Of Mice and Men), Idina Menzel (If/Then), Denzel Washington (A Raisin in the Sun) and Woody Allen (book for Bullets Over Broadway).

The winners will be announced on May 12 and the awards will be presented at a ceremony at Sardi’s Restaurant on May 22. The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers and commentators covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway. Unlike the Tonys, the OCC awards include Broadway and Off-Broadway, with separate categories for Outstanding New Play and Musical. In all other categories, there are nominees from both Off and on Broadway.

Here are a selection of the nominees.
