You may recognize the name David Sheward from his extensive Broadway coverage right here on NewYork.com. The respected critic and expert has decades of knowledge of the ins and outs, ups and downs of Broadway — and now he’s decided to share it with tours of Broadway’s biggest sights.
The two-hour tour will cover Broadway from the perspective of a theater critic, giving you his exclusive insider perspective. And he really knows what he’s talking about – he votes for the annual Drama Desk awards (and served as the president for seven years) and is part of the elite group that votes for the Tony Awards every year. Pick his brain about the history of Broadway as well as the theaters themselves. You know he’s got some juicy stories to share.
There will be many fascinating points of interest in the Theater District along the way. You’ll stop at Sardi’s, a New York institution, to hear not only the story behind the caricatures but also Sheward’s own experiences with celebrities like Julie Andrews and Carol Channing. You’ll also spend time hearing about the theaters themselves, including the evolution of Studio 54 from opera house to television and radio studio to infamous nightclub (did you know that Alec Baldwin used to sling drinks behind the bar?) to Broadway theater and current home to the revival of Cabaret.
The Critics Choice Tours run every weekday from 10am to noon and require advance registration.
