Tony and Emmy winner Tyne Daly (Gypsy, Cagney and Lacey) will star in Terrence McNally’s drama Mothers and Sons, beginning previews on Feb. 23 at the John Golden Theater in advance of a March 23 opening.
Daly plays a mother who pays a surprise visit to her late son’s former partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. She starred in an earlier production at the Bucks County Playhouse in June 2013. Additional casting will be announced. The play is based on characters in McNally’s one-act play “Andre’s Mother” which was also filmed for TV and won the author an Emmy for his teleplay. Sheryl Kaller (Next Fall) will direct.
This marks McNally’s 20th Broadway show. He is the winner of four Tonys—two for Best Play for Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class and two for Best Book of a Musical for Ragtime and The Full Monty. Other Broadway productions include Bad Habits, The Ritz, The Rink, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune.
In addition to the Tony for Gypsy, Daly has won six Emmy Awards—four for Cagney and Lacey, one for Judging Amy, and one for Christy. Her additional Broadway credits include revivals of Master Class and The Seagull, Rabbit Hole, and That Summer—That Fall.
