What do you love about New York?
1. I love Sant Ambroeus. It’s refined. The coffee is exceptional. The service is exceptional. It’s like being in Milan, and it’s just perfect. It’s what I want to do every morning. I drop my kids off at school, I go to Sant Ambroeus for a double espresso, maybe a little sandwich. I first discovered it 32 years ago. Then it left. It was on 77th and Madison. Then Fauchon came in, failed. And they brought Sant Ambroeus back.
2. I also love to go to Nat Sherman and have a cigar in the afternoon. It’s on 12 East 42nd Street. Michael Herklots, the curator of Nat Sherman, is first of all, hysterically funny. But he’s so smart and knowledgeable, and he’s such a great raconteur and he has great stories. He knows about cigars like no one I’ve ever met. And he loves life. Of course he has Dominicans and non-Cubans there, but I do like Cubans. But he has a line called the Signature Line that is remarkable. But I like a Corona. It depends on what time of day. There are breakfast smokes, little small 48-gage things, and there are lighter smokes and darker maduros. Depends on the time of day.
3. I also love to take my family out to dinner. We have a ritual. Once a week we try to go to Felidia, which is a little Italian restaurant. They’re very welcoming, the food is delicious, they love kids, and it’s just what you want to eat. They do really nice specials. The pastas are great. The vitella tonnato is amazing.
