I remember coming to New York the summer before I started college with a friend for a visit. It was my first time here and I loved it. I’ll never forget driving into the city for the first time. I remember coming in from Jersey on a bus and seeing the Empire State Building. It was incredible. And the smell, Manhattan has a unique sort of funky smell that you’ve never smelled anywhere else before. I like to describe it as funky — it’s both good and bad. They had to drag me out after that first visit. I knew it was somewhere I wanted to be. So, I saved up some money. I sang on cruise ships for a little while and saved up some cash to come here. I love the town. I love the energy. I love the people. It feels like home.
What do you love about New York?
1. I love Central Park. I love that it’s man-made and yet it seems so organically built into the city. I don’t think the city would work without it.
2. I love the subway because it’s cheaper than a car. I love the people and the subway system. I live in Washington Heights, so it’s so easier to get in the subway and just take the express on uptown.
3. I like Hudson River Park, the park that they built near the High Line, along the Hudson. It has great public space. I think over the last couple of years, Mayor Bloomberg did a great job of creating public space as a priority for the people of the city and it’s so amazing. I bike, run and just take in the sunshine there. That whole area, especially downtown near the High Line is really beautiful.
