Discover George Heney’s Wonderful Dodgers Memorabilia Collection

The lifelong fan still lives in his childhood home where he is surrounded by his passion

George Heney was born 72 years ago in Brooklyn, and today he still lives in the same Clinton Hill house where he was raised. He’s been a Brooklyn Dodgers fan since he was a child, watching the games on TV when he was in the hospital for three years recovering from rheumatic fever. He worked nights at the Daily News plant in Prospect Heights for 30 years, before retiring on disability in the mid-90s due to heart problems lingering from his childhood illness.

Heney has a collection of Dodgers memorabilia that even the Hall of Fame would salivate over, including a baseball he received as a child that bears the signatures of Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and other Dodger greats. Even though the Dodgers left Brooklyn in 1957, Heney still considers them to represent the parts of Brooklyn that have changed over the years, many of which he misses greatly. “Brooklyn ain’t what it used to be,” he said. “It’s safer, but it’s lost something. Years ago there were a lot of drugs, but our block was one of the good ones, even in the bad times.”
