Cheap Eats NYC: $5 Lunch in Williamsburg

In this ongoing penny-pinching series, we explore where in New York City you can find a tasty lunch for $5. Today we head to Brooklyn, where it’s easy to find yourself dropping far too much money on a good lunch these days. But there’s no need to do so. Here are five places to get lunch for $5 or under in Williamsburg, from a joint specializing in breakfast tacos to an unforgettably good slice shop.

Tacos at Dos Toros

While Oasis may be better known as a late-night haven for those who’ve had a few too many, its $3 pita sandwiches stuffed with piping hot falafel go down easy any time of day. And if you’d rather not go the vegetarian route, the shawarma and shish kebab sandwiches are only two bucks more. Right by the Bedford L stop, for added convenience. 161 N. 7th St., Brooklyn, 718-218-7607

Best Pizza
If you don’t look too closely, you might mistake Best Pizza for any nondescript pizzeria — but that’d be a mistake, as the slices coming out of the wood-fired oven here are some of the best in town. The Grandma slice, the white pizza, the standard slice; you just can’t go wrong, and they’re all under $5. 33 Havemeyer St., Brooklyn, 718-599-2210,

Dos Toros
Pick up tacos (all under $5) from this Cali-Mex spot, with locations in the West Village, Union Square and the Upper East Side, as well as Williamsburg. The juicy carnitas and flavorful carne asada are particularly good bets. 189 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, 718-384-8833,

Pies ‘n’ Thighs
While some options at this cutely retro fried-chicken-and-pie joint are pricier, one of our favorites — The Banjo, egg and cheese on a fresh biscuit — is just $4. Add bacon or sausage for $2 more. (If you decide to just get a slice of banana cream or sour cherry pear crumble pie instead, both $5 or under, we won’t tell). 166 S. 4th St., Brooklyn, 347-529-6090,

We like a place that knows how to specialize, and Whirlybird is all about “top-notch espresso and breakfast tacos.” For $3-plus each, those breakfast tacos are incredibly satisfying, particularly when chorizo gets involved. 254 S. 2nd St., Brooklyn, 718-384-1928,
