Event Preview: Taste Talks in Brooklyn

New York has more than its fair share of food events, particularly in the fall, and Taste Talks (taste-talks.com), on Sept. 14 and 15, looks to be a particularly promising one. The Brooklyn food conference has its speakers and talent curated by April Bloomfield of the Spotted Pig – and such luminaries as Mario Batali, Wylie Dufresne and Dan Barber are all on board. Here are four events to look out for.

Taste Talks

Tracking the Brooklyn Food Boom
When: Saturday, Sept. 14; 6pm-7pm
Where: Wythe Screening Room, Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn
Expect: Such Brooklyn food innovators as Paulie Gee of pizzeria Paulie Gee‘s, Saul Bolton of Saul, and Peter Shelsky of Shelsky’s Smoked Fish will talk about the borough’s artisanal food movement, its past and its future.

Intro to Food Photography
When: Saturday, Sept. 14; 12pm-1pm
Where: Wythe Private Dining Room, Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn
Expect: Widely acclaimed food photographer Daniel Krieger will instruct about every facet of the craft, from iPhone use to staging, lighting and camera settings.

Why Does the Coffee in (Some) Restaurants Suck?
When: Saturday, Sept. 14; 2pm-3pm
Where: Wythe Screening Room, Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn
Expect: Moderated by Oliver Strand, coffee expert at the New York Times, this panel will examine the state of restaurant coffee and how restaurants can up their coffee game.

Gluten Matters and the Future of Bread
When: Saturday, Sept. 14; 3pm-4pm
Where: Wythe Screening Room, Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn
Expect: A number of bakers and chefs, in conversation with Erin Fairbanks of Heritage Radio, will discuss gluten and baking, different breeds of wheat, and how gluten plays a role in baking.
