James Beard 2013: Countdown to the Culinary ‘Oscars’ Begins Now

On Monday, May 6, the annual James Beard Foundation Awards and Gala will be held at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Frequently referred to as the “Oscars of the food world,” it’s where hundreds of culinary stars gather in their black-tie best to see who will take home the country’s highest epicurean honors. The theme Lights! Camera! Taste! promises a theatrically delicious evening.

The James Beard Foundation Awards was established in 1990 to recognize culinary excellence across the United States. This year, more than 60 awards will be presented to the exceptional journalists, cookbook authors, chefs and restaurateurs across the nation.

The awards for “Best Chefs in America” span 10 regions. As the country’s food capital, New York City has more than a dozen nominees for the chef and restaurant awards, as well as the distinction of being the only city to warrant its own category.

James Beard, the namesake of the awards and the foundation, is commonly referred to as “the godfather of American cuisine.” He was a celebrated culinary educator, cookbook writer and popular television cooking show host.

The not-for-profit foundation continues the spirit of Beard by mentoring chefs and food enthusiasts around the country through educational programs, scholarships and events, as well as maintaining the James Beard House in Greenwich Village, which hosts dinners by visiting chefs about 20 nights a month.
