What goes into a good bar? Quality cocktails, seasoned bartenders and a lively crowd certainly contribute to many a fine bar. In New York City, however, there’s always something a little extra special about a bar with a view. The new multi-level Midtown cocktail lounge, The Skylark, which opened recently in Times Square, certainly has the view department covered with an expansive vista looking out onto the Empire State Building, the Hudson River, and all of Midtown –and by the looks of its cocktail menu that asset is covered too.
The Story: The industry team of David Rabin (The Lambs Club, Jimmy, et al.), Jim Kirsch and Alison Awerbuch (catering company Allison Kirsch) opened this spacious 30th-floor lounge just off of Times Square.
The Look: The multi-level Skylark has ample space both indoors and out, with an open-air terrace and indoor booths and tables — but you may not really notice the decor, as your eyes will be on the view the whole time. (The actual roof deck is closed for the season, so expect to be indoors until spring.)
The Drinks: Johnny Swet (of Jimmy) designed the list of likable cocktails. For fall, we’re inclined toward the New York State of Mind (Laird’s Bonded apple brandy, Pama, lime, ginger beer) or The Harvest (Brugal Añejo rum, Xante pear liqueur, pear puree, and charred rosemary), but The Coco, made with five botanical and floral liquors, Champagne and strawberry pearls seems a good pick in any season.
The Scene: Given its Midtown digs and top-floor appeal, expect an after-work crowd here, whether mingling in the main lounge or booking private parties in the Pool Room (yep, with a billiards table) or the Living Room.
