Tickler Cheddar and Stone Ground Cheese Grits at Boulton & Watt

What’s for brunch this weekend? How about a fab dish from a new East Village option

The corridor of First Street between First Avenue and Avenue A is a brunchers hub on weekends. Lines perpetually snake out the door from Prune; JoeDoe has a cult following for its biscuits. Now, the new kid on the block — Boulton & Watt — just rolled out brunch service. The cozy, steampunky-themed gastropub serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am.

There are few more comforting ways to start off a morning, or to sop up a previous night’s indulgence, than with a generous plate of the Tickler cheddar and stone ground cheese grits ($12). While the nutty-and-sweet, cheekily-named English cheese gets top billing, the dish also includes a poached egg, chorizo and charred tomatillo for the grits to soak in. Each bite unveils a soothing, spicy, salty, roasty layer of flavor.

The restaurant also serves its signature “pickle jars” ($5) at brunch, with creative marinades such as pineapple with habanero, mint and basil and Brussels sprouts with garlic and dill; a unique way to get the appetite started.  One final reason to get out of bed and go: barbecue sauce in the Bloody Mary ($5).
