Moms deserve a lot more celebration than just one day of the year. But when you’re looking to honor Mother’s Day on May 11, 2014, New York presents plenty of opportunities. Here are five ways to celebrate Mom in the city, whether she prefers mimosas with her grown children or zoo time with her little ones.
Listen to Your Mother
You should listen to your mother, but don’t take it from us; head to this live show staged all across the country leading up to Mother’s Day — it’s in New York on May 4. Performers read stories of motherhood for a show that’s in turns funny, heartfelt, and always entertaining. Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway, 212-864-5400, listentoyourmothershow.com/nyc
NY Botanical Garden Mother’s Day Garden Party
This garden party has everything you need to celebrate Mom: live music, picnic snacks, crafts for kids and, of course, the spectacular scenery of the Botanical Garden. Stephen Starr Events will host a grand brunch, and a vintage-style photographer will be on hand to capture shots of the whole family. New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, nybg.org
Mother’s Day at Central Park Zoo
Mom and kids will find plenty to love at the Central Park Zoo, which is throwing a “family party” for the occasion — visit animal moms and babies together, go on a scavenger hunt, and enjoy treats at the end. Central Park Zoo, 65th St. and Fifth Ave., centralparkzoo.com, buy tickets at tickets.wcs.org
Jazz Brunch at One if by Land, Two if by Sea
It doesn’t get classier than this West Village favorite, so celebrate Mother’s Day with the restaurant’s jazz brunch; enjoy the elegant eggs Arcadia with biscuits, lobster and poached eggs, or indulgent bourbon and banana French toast alongside Prosecco cocktails and live jazz music. 17 Barrow St., 212-255-8649, oneifbyland.com
Can’t celebrate on the day itself? Head to Mampalooza on the Sunday after Mother’s Day, May 18. Started in 2002, this international event celebrates mothers each year, and in New York the event is at Pier 1 in Riverside Park. From 11am to 5pm, the free festival features live music, family-appropriate crafts and activities, face-painting and much more. Riverside Park, entrance W. 68th St. at the Hudson River, mamapalooza.com
Mother’s Day Cruise with Hornblower
If you and your mom love to cruise but can’t commit to the Bahamas, take to the New York City waterways with this two-hour Mother’s Day Cruise on May 11 at 1pm. Sip mimosas as the Hornblower yacht goes on a leisurely tour along the Hudson. Enjoy a buffet and DJ while taking in views of the skyline and iconic harbor sights, from Ellis Island and Governors Island to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Pier 40, 353 West Street at W. Houston Street, get tickets
Mother’s Day Dining Cruise with World Yacht
Flowers and chocolates are nice. But if you really want to please Mom, treat her to a World Yacht Mother’s Day Cruise for either brunch (12:30) or dinner (7pm) on May 11. The cruise has all the ingredients for a perfect Mother’s Day: views of the sparkling New York City skyline, river breezes, a multi-course feast and a cocktail (or three) to toast Mom.
