About Dialog in the Dark
You could walk to work with your eyes closed, right? Well, a groundbreaking new exhibition puts your senses to the test to see how far you really can go without being able to rely on sight. Dialog in the Dark is a new experience at the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan where New York is experienced through its sounds, tastes, temperatures, and textures - just not visually. This exhibit puts a walking cane in your hand and drops you into complete darkness for a unique sensory experience.
Dialog in the Dark offers the chance to "see" the city from a completely different perspective. If you’ve ever wondered what life in the big city is like for the visually impaired, this is your chance to find out. During this one hour long tour, visually impaired guides lead groups through a range of experiences including what it’s like to ride the subway or maneuver Times Square without the ability to depend on your sight.
This experience is open Thursday through Sunday only, right next to the Bodies exhibit at the South Street Seaport. Comfortable shoes are required and lockers are provided to store personal items and any light-emitting devices (such as phones or watches). All participants will be plunged into complete darkness, but will be encouraged to chat, laugh, and share interpretations throughout the experience.
