About Mountain Creek Ski Resort
When you think New York City, you most likely don’t think skiing and outdoor adventures. But that’s what makes the city so surprising: You never know what’s lurking right around the corner (or maybe just a little farther away).
Located only 47 miles from the George Washington Bridge (translation: about an hour by car or bus), New Jersey’s Mountain Creek Ski & Snowboard Resort is the New York metro area’s closest slope-filled escape -- and it has tons to offer. With 44 different trails on 167 acres spread across four steep peaks, Mountain Creek is a winter wonderland, to be sure.
You can ski and snowboard to your heart’s content on trails of varying skill levels, from super easy to extremely difficult. If you want a little practice before you hit the slopes, there are a host of lesson options, from group plans to classes for kids, all led by world-class instructors who know the lay of the land incredibly well and can help you hit the slopes like a pro. (A word on the snow: The area sees an average of 65 inches of natural snowfall a year, but 1,000 snow guns all across the site make sure there’s always plenty of white stuff wherever you slalom.)
Gliding down a ski slope and feeling that brisk air against your face is only the beginning of all that Mountain Creek has to offer. Climb aboard the Alpine Mountain Coaster for a twisty, curvy, action-packed ride (think a mountainside rollercoaster). Hop on a Zoom Zipline and hold on tight. Or enjoy the family-friendly Soaring Eagle, for a ride that simulates the experience of flight, along with glorious views all along the way.
If you want to relax after all that action on the slopes, there are plenty of extras to add on to your day, like a soothing visit to the Elements and Reflections Spa at the adjacent Crystal Springs Resort. Plus, if you’ve worked up an appetite, there are all kinds of delicious dining selections right at Mountain Creek, from the Red Tail Lodge (for a classic après ski experience, with a beer or cocktail) to the Hawk’s Nest (an intimate, gourmet restaurant where hearty fare and grand views are on the menu).
Come for the day or spend the night at a nearby lodge. And you’ll be back to the city in no time.
It’s up to you: all day, an afternoon or longer (for night skiing). Your lift ticket gets you up the trails for great skiing and snowboarding.
Mountain Creek is open through March 23, 2014, weather permitting. There are special operating hours during the holidays, Martin Luther King Day weekend and President’s Day weekend.
Did you know?
Mother Nature doesn’t always comply with the real flaky goodness, so Mountain Creek relies on a complex snowmaking process to create a base or add man-made snow to an existing dusting. The snowmaking process is highly scientific, and the conditions have to be just right for it all to stick. This means a perfect mix of temperature, air pressure and humidity.
Mountain Creek offers a wide variety of lifts, from high-speed open-air gondolas to fixed-grip quad chairlifts. What does this mean to you? For one thing, you get to experience all different kinds of ways to get to the top of the mountains. And best of all, you can sit back, relax and take in the views.
Mountain Creek Ski & Snowboard Resort is ideal for anyone who loves the great outdoors and wants some adventurous activities -- and this applies to people with varied skill levels. So even if you’re not an expert skier, you’ll find a wide range of group classes you can enjoy before you hit the slopes. If you’re all about the après ski, there are several cozy restaurants and lounges where you can enjoy cocoa or something a little stronger while your friends and family slice through the snow.
Good for kids?
Absolutely. Mountain Creek is very kid friendly, with classes galore for the younger set, along with action rides and yummy dining options.
