About Whiteface Lake Placid
Whiteface Mountain is a ski resort of Olympic proportions, and it’s located in gorgeous Lake Placid, New York, five hours north of New York City, with views of the Adirondacks stretching as far as the eye can see.
Known around the world as the skiing venue of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, Whiteface Mountain boasts all kinds of impressive features. Take a gulp of fresh mountain air and brace yourself for a 3,166-foot plunge that world-class athletes have found challenging – it’s the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies. In total, there are 86 trails stretching across 22 miles and spread over three massive peaks. If skiing’s your thing, this is the mountain for you.
Super-powered downhill racing is only part of the picture here; getting to the top of the mountain is a great part of the fun, too. This resort has 10 lifts, including a gondola with eye-popping views, a high-speed quad and a Magic Carpet (sort of like a conveyor belt for the mogul set).
The mountain offers all kinds of adventures beyond skiing as well. Climb aboard a bobsled -- complete with a professional driver and brakeman -- for a ride through the course used in the ‘80 Olympic games. Go snow tubing down a 700-foot chute, which is like inner tubing, winter-style. Experience the sport of Skeleton, where you lie on your stomach on a sled and reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. Or explore the vast terrain of the area through the quiet beauty of cross-country skiing, which is quite the workout itself.
When you’re ready to take things a little easier, there’s the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, one of the resort’s six terrific restaurants (from grab-and-go to crepes and more), shopping (with must-browse venues for ski equipment or apparel) and options to stay overnight, if you want to extend your adventure for a couple of days or more.
It’s all a winter lover’s paradise -- and in picture-perfect upstate New York.
Whiteface Mountain is open for the season and will close April 13, 2014, weather permitting. Whiteface will be open Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2013.
Did you know?
Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest peak in the United States and offers 360-degree views of the Adirondacks on a clear day. On a very clear day? You can see the skyscrapers of Montreal.
The resort is just a two-hour drive to Montreal, if you want to extend your trip to the north just a bit. It’s also three hours to Ottawa and five-and-a-half hours to Toronto.
Whiteface Mountain Resort is perfect for anyone who wants a pure winter experience, whether that means speeding down a mountain at pulse-quickening speeds, gliding up a hill in a gondola to savor the views, sipping a glass of red wine while others do the adventurous stuff, taking classes to increase your outdoor skills, enjoying some shopping, or so much more.
Good for kids?
You bet. This is the ultimate kid-friendly experience, no matter the age. There’s a nursery for the pre-ski set. The little ones can take classes (from as young as age 4 or even 3 for snowboarders). And there’s even a Future Medalist program for intermediate to more advanced young skiers.
