New York Restaurant: Agave

By Alexis Maron

Southwest cuisine, romantic atmosphere, powerful drinks and a convenient location…what else could you ask for in a restaurant? Agave’s unique southwestern menu created by Chef Richard Pang leaves nothing to be desired, from his hand-hacked avocado guacamole, to the skirt steak quesadillas and right on to the cheese cake with guava sauce and port selection. The food is unique, delicious and always served in a timely fashion, and even if you are there to solely enjoy a cocktail, the bar atmosphere is mellow and romantic, and the pomegranate margaritas are strong and tasty.

The romance of the décor comes from the high and smooth adobe-like ceilings with the candle sconces lining the walls and the high glass windows forming the front room of the restaurant. Farther along into the lower level, in a cave like room, you’ll find wooden tables. The back room feels lodge-like and cozy and inspires you to order mounds of food from the Southwestern comfort food menu.

The menu is moderately priced, with the main dishes ranging from $15 to $30, but the portions are large and the food is filling. If you’re not much of a daredevil when it comes to your food selections, there are options for you as well, such as the cheese quesadillas, and Kobe beef burgers. On the other hand, if you like to experiment more with your palate, you can try the Camarones Al Ajillo, which are a gulf shrimp with seared green garlic and tomato mint salsa, or the Santa Fe Shephard’s Pie. For a beverage to accompany your meal, the fresh fruit of the day margarita never disappoints, and the Hot and Spicy Margarita is a taste bud explosion.

Overall, the atmosphere, the food and the service is pleasant and consistent and one should bet on a positive experience when dining at Agave.
