  • About The Bridges of Madison County

True romance is headed to Broadway this winter, as a cast and creative team with an impeccable pedigree come together to adapt Robert James Waller’s much-loved novel for the stage in a highly anticipated new musical The Bridges of Madison County.

Starring four-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara (South Pacific, Nice Work If You Can Get It) and Steven Pasquale (A Man of No Importance, TV’s Rescue Me), The Bridges of Madison County is the intimate, soaring story of a woman who moves from Italy to Iowa, believing that her life is settled. Then one day, a handsome photographer arrives at her door, showing her the heart’s many surprising ways and sweeping her up on a romantic experience she certainly never expected.

Directing is Barlett Sher, the Tony-winning director who helmed the astonishing new production of South Pacific a few seasons back, along with The Light in the Piazza. And the show features a score by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) and a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman (The Color Purple, The Secret Garden).

During its initial run at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer, the show was hailed as “something quite rare and quite special” by the Berkshire Eagle. And the Hartford Courant raved, “You’ll fall in love with ‘Bridges,’" adding that it is “a lush, lovely and immensely moving musical.”

Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County first rocketed to success as a bestselling novel in 1992 and was later adapted into a popular film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.
