Cirque du Soleil - Totem - New York Tickets

  • About Cirque du Soleil TOTEM

Coming to New York for a limited engagement March 14 through May 5, 2013, Cirque du Soleil’s big top touring show TOTEM is an exhilarating spectacle of award-winning showmanship and acrobatic artistry.

In this evolution-themed circus, the animals are just humans in costume, but the experience is so transcendent you'll wonder why anyone would ever bother with a lion tamer. In the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top), you’ll find wonders like a 2,700 pound “turtle” carapace that hovers and descends to enable feats of gymnastic daring-do. And a 10,000-pound “scorpion bridge” features eight hydraulic motors that allow it to move throughout the tent during the show.

With 52 performing artists from 19 countries and 750 costume elements, TOTEM traces the evolution of mankind from a primordial state to present-day, drawing inspiration from the many creation myths of the world’s cultures. A full range of circus skills are employed, including parallel bars, clowning, hand balancing, trapeze work, Russian bars, foot juggling, and much, much more. But jaw-dropping physical feats and Olympic-level technique are only part of the equation: with Cirque du Soleil, you also get mesmerizing music, elegant sets and world-class pageantry.

The show's technical crew uses interactive projection technology to emphasize the organic world of TOTEM, which features a marsh lined with reeds near an island (the stage), upon which images are beamed. The audience experiences a virtual swamp, river, marsh, lake, ocean, volanic island, pond and starry sky—all immersive projections based on actual footage filmed throughout the world.

If you've never seen a Cirque du Soleil production before, TOTEM is an excellent introduction to the unparalleled virtuosity of Cirque’s craft, which has been honed and perfected over 30 years. If you have seen one of their shows before, you already know this one isn't to be missed.
